Gene Description


CD63 (gene ID 967), also known as LAMP-3 or ME491 (melanoma-associated antigen), MLA1, OMA81H, TSPAN30, encodes a cell surface glycoprotein. CD63 is a member of the tetraspan transmembrane superfamily (TM4SF) protein expressed on activated platelets, monocytes/macrophages, endothelium, fibroblasts, osteoclasts, and smooth muscle cells.CD63 functions as cell surface receptor for TIMP1 and has functions in mediating signal transduction processes and then regulate a variety of cellular processes such as cell proliferation, activation and motility. It has been reported that CD63 protein associated with tumor progression and served as a blood platelet activation marker and the deficiency of this protein may be associated with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS).

Strain specific analysis of CD63 gene expression in wild type (WT) and B-hCD63 mice by RT-PCR. 
Mouse Cd63 mRNA was detectable only in kidney of wild type (+/+) mice. Human CD63 mRNA was detectable only in H/H but not in +/+ mice.

Macrophages were collected from bone marrow of WT and homozygous B-hCD63 mice, and analyzed by flow cytometry with species-specific CD63 antibody. Mouse CD63 was detectable in WT mice. Human CD63 was exclusively detectable in homozygous B-hCD63 mice but not WT mice.
