Gene Description


IFNG gene encodes a soluble cytokine that is a member of the type II interferon class. The encoded protein is secreted by cells of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. The active protein is a homodimer that binds to the interferon gamma receptor which triggers a cellular response to viral and microbial infections. IFNγ has antiviral, immunoregulatory, and anti-tumor properties. It alters transcription in up to 30 genes producing a variety of physiological and cellular responses. IFNGR1 encodes the ligand-binding chain (alpha) of the gamma interferon receptor. IFNG2 encodes the non-ligand-binding beta chain of the gamma interferon receptor. Human interferon-gamma receptor is a heterodimer of IFNGR1 and IFNGR2. Defects in IFNGR1 or IFNGR2 will cause of mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease(MSMD), also known as familial disseminated atypical mycobacterial infection.

IFNGR1 expression analysis in B-hIFNGR1 mice by RT-PCR and flow cytometry. (A) RT-PCR analysis of  IFNGR1. The human IFNGR1 mRNA was only detectable in splenocytes  of the homozygous B-hIFNGR1 mice. (B) Peritoneal derived macrophage cells were collected from WT and B-hIFNGR1 mice, and analyzed by flow cytometry with species-specific anti-IFNGR1 antibody. Human IFNGR1 was detectable in B-hIFNGR1 mice but not in WT mice.
